  • Our Lady of Lourdes Graduate Releases Novel

Our Lady of Lourdes graduate, Kathryn Burak, released her first novel, Emily's Dress and Other Missing Things (Roaring Brook/Macmillan) on Oct. 2, 2012.

Emily's Dress is about a girl who steals Emily Dickinson's dress from the poet's museum in Amherst, Massachusetts, and solves the mystery of her best friend's disappearance. The starred Booklist review described the novel as "a complete portrait of loss, longing, redemption, and love,'' and the Independent Booksellers Association put it on its highly-selective New Voices list for 2012.

"I wanted to tell the story of a girl who is grieving, who turns to the poetry of Emily Dickinson to help her understand her mother's death, but who also finds her own writing transformative," said Burak, a Boston University writing professor who has published numerous short stories and poems in magazines and literary journals such as the Missouri Review, Western Humanities Review, Seventeen, and Fiction. She is also the co-author of Writing in the Works, a composition textbook.

Burak developed a passion for writing as a high school student. "When I first started writing, as a high school student at Lourdes, the message I got was "you can be anything you want to be,'" Burak said. "It came at the right time for me, when I was trying to decide who I was and how to make sense of the world." Burak pursued her interest in writing through college and she went on to earn an MFA in creative writing from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Burak found setting a novel in Amherst, at the poet's house, too tempting to pass up. "After living in Amherst, you can really feel close to Dickinson," Burak says, "especially if you already love poetry." She is teaming up with the Emily Dickinson Museum in Amherst, Mass., restock the bookshelves in the Dickinson homestead, through a fundraising project.

Dickinson family members were avid readers and amassed hundreds of volumes, but over the years the books were donated to universities, leaving the shelves bare. Now, museum officials have put together a list of the family's books and hope to garner donations to replenish the shelves.

Burak got involved after contacting Jane Wald, the museum's executive director, to tell her about her novel.

"The book has some breaking and entering as well as grand theft." she said, "I was afraid the people who run the museum would want to ban me from Amherst. Instead, they invited me to read there."

Wald also told Burak about the Replenishing the Shelves project, and Burak decided she wanted to help. "I want my book to help bring some of her books back," Burak said.

  • Fortnight For Freedom: Defending Religious Liberty

Bishop Joseph P. McFadden has announced that the Diocese of Harrisburg will take part and be fully supportive of The "Fortnight for Freedom." This is a 14-day period of prayer, education and action in support of religious freedom, from June 21-July 4 that was called for by the Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. It was instituted because of concerns over threats to religious freedom, both at home and abroad.

In a letter sent to all priests Bishop McFadden said, "Without exaggeration, I tell you that we are engaged in one of the most important challenges of our lifetime. Every priest and deacon, every consecrated man and woman, every member of the laity needs to understand fully that the loss of this struggle is the loss of our personal and God-given right to practice our Christian faith in this country."

The Bishop stressed that this is not a political effort but one that is motivated by faith. He called the faithful to take action in addition to prayer and fasting. He asked them to contact their elected officials and inform them that as believers it is vital that we are able to practice our faith in every dimension of our lives.

Culminating on Independence Day, this special period of prayer, study, catechesis, and public action will emphasize both our Christian and American heritage of liberty. Special events that support this great national campaign of teaching and witness for religious liberty have been scheduled.

  • OUR LADY OF LOURDES ALUMNI FOUNDATION CREATED TO SUPPORT FUNDRAISING AND ENDOWMENT EFFORTS
    - Volunteers and alumni launch new foundation to enhance the financial future of Our Lady of Lourdes Regional School -

COAL TOWNSHIP, Pa., June 1, 2012 - In an effort to raise funds and encourage donations directly allocated to Our Lady of Lourdes Regional School (OLOL), a group of volunteers and school alumni joined together to create the Our Lady of Lourdes Alumni Foundation. Like many private schools across Pennsylvania, OLOL's subsidies from benefactor organizations have substantially decreased. This makes outside donations to OLOL even more crucial to maintain the sustainability and growth of the school's educational programs, as well as its scholarship funds.

The Foundation is already making headway with regional businesses that have the opportunity to donate directly to the school through the Neumann Scholarship Foundation (NSF), a charitable scholarship organization. Under the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC), qualified private businesses that donate to the school via the NSF are eligible to receive a tax credit of 75 to 90 percent of their donation, with credits exceeding no greater than $300,000 per taxable year. Monies designated through EITC to OLOL are then available for need-based tuition assistance.

"Our goal is to raise awareness and rally area businesses to take advantage of money available that can help the future of OLOL," said Tony Varano, Chairman of the Foundation. "So our very first step i Error Page View Exception
